Material Girls Challenges

Secret Sister

Each February, our Challenge coordinators put together a fun swap for our members! We have 2 Secret Sister swaps each year, one that starts in February, one that starts in June. Sometimes there is a theme for the swap, sometimes it's just "anything goes" and they are all a wonderful opportunity to get to know someone and enhance your skills in dollmaking. The reveals are some of the most highly anticipated meetings of the year!

Details will be announced in February.

If you are participating in the challenge, but your Secret Sister is not someone you know very well, check out the "Favorites list" to get some ideas of where to start. If your Secret Sister is not listed, e-mail me and I will contact them for you and let them know someone is thinking about them. :)

Round Robin
Each January our Round Robin starts with a bang!

This time, the theme is "A New Interpretation". Participants will use one of 4 patterns from the Material Girls Book "Deeper Into the Woods". Choose Wood Nymph Willow, Yellow Bird, the Leprechaun or the Elf for your body pattern.

You will bring a body (made from one of the 4 patterns) with a head, arms and legs to the next meeting in a brown paper bag. There will be two groups that the dolls are passed around in. One group is for people who are taking this very seriously and plan to put many hours into each step of the exchange. The other group will be the "just for fun" group who plan to do a great, creative job with each step but don't plan to spend hours and hours and hours. You will get to chose which group you want to be in.

If you want a journal of the creation of the doll as she passes through other's hands, put a journal in the bag with the doll. If you'd like a strip of cloth with the signatures of the people who work on the doll, put that in the bag with the doll. If you have fabric you'd like used in the doll's costume or embellishments you'd like to see on the doll, put that in the bag. It's fine just to bring the bag with the doll and nothing else in it too. It will be a simple exchange each month. The numbered bags will be passed forward one number and each month will have a specified task such as head/hair, costume, setting, accessories, or other steps to be determined by the divas.

Questions? E-mail Marlene or Nancie and they will be glad to help!
